Late.Hon. Amir H. Jamal

Minister for Finance and Planning (1966 - 1972; 1976 - 1977)

He was a Tanzanian politician and diplomat who served as a Minister under various portfolios in the Julius Nyerere administration. He represented the parliamentary constituency of Morogoro from 1960 to 1985 and was Tanzania's longest-serving Finance Minister and led the ministry for about 12 years. 


Jamal was born in 1922 in Morogoro, Tanzania, to a trading family of Indian origin. He attended the University of Calcutta in India, where he studied economics and political science. After graduating from Calcutta, Jamal returned to Tanzania to work for his father's business. 


In 1954, Jamal was elected to the Legislative Council of Tanganyika, the country's governing body then. He was a member of the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU), the party that led the country to independence in 1961.
