Sir Mota Singh, the first ethnic minority judge in England, leaves behind a legacy of trailblazing achievement and dedication to justice. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, he overcame adversity at a young age when he assumed responsibility for his family following his father's tragic passing. Despite these challenges, his academic prowess shone through, and he pursued his legal education with determination.

Moving to London with his family in 1953, Sir Mota Singh embarked on a remarkable journey to become a distinguished member of the legal profession. His commitment to his studies and his work ethic led to significant achievements, including his appointment as a crown court judge at Southwark crown court in 1982.


Throughout his career, Sir Mota Singh was known for his integrity, expertise, and unwavering dedication to justice. He was a respected figure in landlord and tenant disputes and became a counsel of choice for leading property companies. His legal acumen, combined with his profound sense of duty, earned him recognition and accolades, including a knighthood in 2012 for his contributions to the legal profession and charity.
