The Shanta Foundation

United Kingdom

Born from poverty in Kenya, Bhikhu and Vijay used hard labour, inventiveness, and perseverance to establish a sizable portfolio of pharmaceutical, real estate, and private equity companies. They trace their motivation and enthusiasm to their mother, a young widow who instilled in her children a sense of purpose and compassion despite adversity, and after whom The Shanta Foundation is named. The Foundation's goal is to assist people who are in a similar situation as the Family was then, by providing health, shelter, and education through both self-funded and collaborative programmes with partners such as the Lions Club, Devdaya, and Anoopam Mission.  Shanta Patel, the Foundation's inspiration, died on Friday, September 13, 2019, at the age of 98, following a short illness. She is the mother of three, grandmother of six, and great-grandmother of twelve. Shanta inspired and supported her family on a regular level throughout her life.
